Lie For What: Why do we lie when we don't need to?

Updated: Nov 16, 2023

Your significant other gets a new haircut and you secretly hate it. Instead of saying just that, you respond with, “It looks nice.” Now you’re stuck having to look at the haircut you don’t like and holding in your true feelings. Whether you lie or tell the truth they will be hurt, but it will hurt more if they find out you lied. The main reason we do lie is to save feelings, but somehow when we lie it makes a mess of the truth. So why lie? Is that healthy?

If you’ve ever had a conversation with a child they will give you their honest about everything and anything even if it is unwarranted. For example, maybe your breath stinks and you’re talking close to a child’s face, they will let you know that your breath isn’t the freshest. We accept that from a child, but why not from an adult? I was always told that when you tell one lie you have to tell 10 more to keep the lie believable. Personally, I love telling people the truth, it’s so much more wild than lying. The truth is stranger than fiction.

The thought of lying brought me to read a book simply titled, “Lying” by Sam Smith. While this is a short read after reading it I definitely felt that it could improve human experiences and promotes positive personal development. Choosing not to lie is generally considered a moral and ethical choice, as honesty forms the foundation of trust and healthy relationships. Here are some compelling reasons not to lie:

Maintaining Trust: Honesty is a fundamental element of trust. When you are truthful, people are more likely to believe you and have confidence in your words and actions. Lying erodes trust and can lead to damaged relationships.

Integrity: Being honest demonstrates your integrity and moral character. It shows that you value ethical principles and are committed to living by them.

Respect for Others: Being truthful shows respect for others' right to accurate information. People have the right to make informed decisions based on the truth.

Consistency: Telling the truth consistently allows you to build a reputation for reliability and consistency. Others will know what to expect from you and can rely on your words and actions.

Conflict Resolution: Honesty contributes to effective conflict resolution. When conflicts arise, open communication and truthful discussions help in finding solutions and understanding different perspectives.

Reducing Stress: Lying often requires keeping track of multiple stories, which can lead to anxiety and stress. Being truthful reduces the mental burden of trying to remember and manage fabricated information.

Personal Growth: Choosing honesty encourages self-awareness and personal growth. Facing difficult truths, admitting mistakes, and learning from them are essential aspects of personal development.

Setting a Positive Example: When you prioritize honesty, you set a positive example for others, whether they are friends, family members, or colleagues. Your behavior can influence those around you to value honesty as well.

Avoiding Negative Consequences: Lies can lead to complicated situations and negative consequences. The truth often emerges eventually, and the fallout from being caught in a lie can be more damaging than admitting the truth from the start.

Building Strong Relationships: Honest communication is key to building strong and meaningful relationships. Sharing thoughts, feelings, and experiences openly fosters emotional connections and understanding.

Ethical Responsibility: Being honest is an ethical responsibility to both yourself and others. It reflects your commitment to living in a way that aligns with your values and principles.

Credibility: In professional settings, honesty is crucial for maintaining credibility and a good reputation. Credibility is essential for career advancement and success.

While there may be situations where truthfulness can be challenging, the long-term benefits of honesty often outweigh the short-term discomfort. Ultimately, being truthful fosters an environment of respect, understanding, and genuine connection with others.
